About

In 1936, my grandfather arrived in America from Germany. Upon his arrival, he opened a bakery, “Bartholomae’s Bakery”. The bakery was in Croydon, Pennsylvania. To help around the bakery my grandfather enlisted the help of his family, my Father Fritz and my Uncle Bill. Fritz and my Uncle Bill grew up learning the intricacies of an old-fashioned bakery. After my grandfather passed away, my Uncle Bill continued working in the bakery and eventually owned “Kay’s Bakery” in Bristol, Pennsylvania.

Through the years, my father occasionally worked for him. After working with Bill, my father decided he wanted to bring an old-fashioned bakery back to Croydon. On November 7, 1974, Fritz and my mother Jean opened “Fritz’s Bakery” on State Road in Croydon, Pa. My parents baked everything fresh daily using only the highest quality ingredients. Combined, these two practices created an instant success!

I began working with my Father and Uncle when I was 14 years old. My responsibilities included prep work, baking, and clean up. Basically, I did everything the adults did not want to do; I was their “apprentice”. In 1993, I took over the family business from my mother Jean after the passing of my father Fritz. My goal was to carry forward the family business with the same core values instilled in me by my Father and Uncle while using the delicious recipes handed down from generation to generation.

In 1996 (with some persistence) I was able to persuade my wife Kim to join me in the family business. Under her guidance we added new products such as our Cream Cheese Iced Stickybuns, Stickybun Cakes, Party Trays, and many other delicious goodies which are now a staple at the bakery.

Much like my parents before us, Kim and I ran the bakery together occasionally inviting some new faces into our family. Over the next few years as our staff continued to grow and mature we started searching for new opportunities to support a growing group of employees we now call family. In 2001 we opened a second bakery down the shore but closed up shop in 2007 after a few summers in the sun. We took a few months to assess what we had learned at the beach and decided to open another location a little closer to home in Langhorne, PA. From the first day we opened our doors in Langhorne we knew we had the recipe for success! A short year later we copied that success as we opened a 3rd location in Bensalem.

In September 2012 with a heavy heart we closed the doors of our original Croydon store for the last time. As it sometimes happens in business we had to make the difficult decision to close up shop due to costs. Croydon will forever be the birthplace of Fritz’s Bakery and home to so many great memories. Thanks to the people of Croydon for giving us our start and making us a part of the community for 39 wonderful years!

Our philosophy has always been to serve our customers baked goods that proudly represent our family name. For over forty years, Fritz’s Bakery has been a habit for many, and a tradition for most. Thank you for your support and we look forward to serving you!
